U.S. News – Can Weightlifting Treat Depression?

Becky Stuto, a 45-year-old associate clinical social worker has battled depression for 13 years. Stuto has never tried medical treatments for her depression, instead she has tried to control her depression mostly through aerobic exercise, healthy eating and sufficient sleep. However, it wasn’t until she began powerlifting last summer that she experienced the type of relief more frequently associated with depression treating drugs. Stutz talks about how after weightlifting her confidence improved and her depression levels were significantly reduced. According to Michael Parent, an assistant professor of counseling psychology at Texas Tech University (who is a competitive body builder) states: “it enhances mood, it will help with sleep…it helps people feel better about their body.” With all the confidence and positives that come along with weightlifting it is not a surprise that weightlifting can significantly reduce depression. People have something to take pride in and can see their accomplishments and hard work be put into something.

MyFitnessPal is an app designed to help individuals tracker what they eat and how much they eat, even if they go out to eat in a restaurant. MyFitnessPal even tracks your progress depending on how much weight an individual would like to gain/loss/maintain. This app is great for students that aren’t sure about what or how much food they need to have in order to have a healthy diet and progress toward their health goals. MyFitnessPal even tracks the amount of exercise burned and can calculate how much more intake of food or calories you need for that day to stay on track towards an individuals health goal. I think this app is great for students that want something to help them identify what would be beneficial and not beneficial to eat, want to track their nutritional health progress, and to develop a greater understanding of what they put into their body on a daily basis.

This public service announcement is about the topic of obesity and how obesity can negatively affect individuals’ lives. Obesity or excess weight can make individuals unable to do simple activities like playing outside with their kids or even walking up stairs. Obesity or excess weight also negatively affects individuals’ health and can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and even stroke. I personally think that this public service announcement does a great job to inform listeners about the potential risks of obesity in a small amount of time. I also think that students should understand that excess weight and obesity is usually preventable and/or can be treated with proper diet and exercise.

Fun Way For “Nerd” Students To Look At Fitness

Nerd Fitness is a website designed to be fun and interactive for people that would consider themselves “nerds” but still want to be physically fit. Nerd Fitness is built on the idea that normal people (desk jockeys, nerds, and average joes) “level up” their lives when it comes to fitness. Once an individual signs up with their email on Nerd Fitness, they can create and customize their profile and start completing fitness adventures, quests, and beat boss challenges that help to reach their fitness goals. I personally think that this website offers a great alternative to the standard workout programs that are out there because of how different and interactive Nerd Fitness’ website is. Any program that can get high school or college students that consider themselves “nerds” to go out and complete fitness challenges in order to earn experience and level up their character on the site is a great way to make fitness a fun experience for everyone.

This infographic shows multiple health and fitness statistics that represent what we need to be doing physically and how much we should be eating and drinking water. The most shocking statistic for me is that only 27% of the total adult population attend some type of gym. This statistic seems extremely low than what I would have imagined it would be at. It also shows helpful parameters on diet, exercise, weight loss, and intake needs. The overall message of this infographic is that adults do not take enough action to maintain their basic health needs. I personally think this infographic does a great job to highlight what adults need to do and eat to maintain their health, it promotes different types of fitness, and does a great job showing exactly how prevalent this health problem is to the adult population.

Resistance training also positively affects risk factors such as insulin resistance, resting metabolic rate, glucose metabolism, blood pressure, and body fat, which are associated with diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Research also indicates that virtually all the benefits of resistance training are likely to be obtained in two 15-to-20-minute training sessions a week. The article talks about how controlled resistance training is what people should strive for and doesn’t require the use of heavy resistance. Personally, I think the article did a great job of summing up the benefits of resistance training especially when it comes to health benefits and countering health problems that the majority of society deals with.

The SuRF (Sport, Recreation and Fitness Center) serves Bellarmine University students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This local facility offers group classes for different activities like yoga, meditation, and even special classes like butts and guts. The SuRF is completely free for all current Bellarmine University students, faculty, staff, and current paying Veritas Society members. A 12 month individual alumni membership is $150.00. A 12 month individual Bellarmine University Sponsor is $175.00. SuRF members can also bring one guest and purchase a day pass for their guest for $3.00. The SuRF is open Monday-Thursday from 7am-11pm, Friday from 7am-9pm, Saturday from 9am-5pm, and Sunday from 2pm-9pm. The SuRF is a great place for students and staff that are looking to better themselves in terms of fitness and offers a variety of activities like basketball, free weights, and plenty of machines like treadmills and ellipticals.

Fitbod is an application that can be downloaded and makes it easier for individuals to not only track the workouts that they have already done but also what type of exercises they could that they haven’t tried or recorded yet. What’s unique about Fitbod is that it’s a personalized workout program that generates different types of exercises depending on what you want to accomplish. It’s personalized because it generates exercises and workouts completely based on what you want and what is ideal for your height, weight, and level of weight training. The easy interface, links, and videos that Fitbod provides on so many different types of exercises makes this app so easy to use and love.  I personally think that this app is great for anyone looking for help on what workouts/movements they would like to try depending on what different muscle group they want to involve/improve.
